Manual handling is a requirement in workshops. There will always be times when you have to lift and carry heavy objects. Workers should protect themselves from the hazards of manual handling. This is the reason why companies conduct manual handling trainings. They inform the workers about the hazards of manual handling, how to lift and carry heavy objects and how to keep safe when doing their work that involves manual handling. Workers should be familiar with the proper manual handling techniques. Here are some manual handling tips that can help workers keep themselves safe when doing lifting and carrying of heavy objects: • Check the object that you need to carry. Make sure that you can handle it. How heavy is it? You should know your limitations. How heavy can you carry? Is the object sharp or have something protruding that can cause injury? If you know what you need to lift and carry, you will be able to plan properly how to lift and carry it. You can avoid the hazardous side and you will be able to figure out how to hold the object. • When you lift the object, support your body by bending your knees instead of your back or your body. A common mistake among workers is that they bend their back when they lift heavy objects. This results to the weight of the object concentrated on your back. It can lead to serious back pain or osteoarthritis. • When you lift or carry heavy objects, never twist your body. You can get injured if you do so. • Make sure that your feet are strongly grounded when you lift heavy object. This is to ensure that your body is balanced and that you don’t fall over. Also you should keep your feet a little apart from each other. You have more balance and strength if you do so. • Keep the load as close to your body as possible. This will help distribute the weight of the object in your whole body and not just on your arms. Also when you hug the object, keep your back straight. Do not slouch because it can lead to back pain. Remember these manual handling tips to ensure that you are safe when you handle heavy objects. Industrial work always requires lifting and carrying of heavy objects. Be careful.
